Easy ways to maximise your Momentum discounts
Momentum has a fantastic rewards program that is much better and easier to achieve than any others I’ve come across in South Africa. It’s more straightforward and transparent and I can say this because I use it myself.
If you are with Momentum and are not taking advantage of the benefits programme then you are doing yourself a great injustice.
The rewards program is based on an incremental points system. The more points you earn, the higher your status, and the greater your discount (max is 60% achieved after being on the rewards programme for a min of 2 years). Status levels start at Bronze (0 points), Silver (500 points), Gold (1000 points), Platinum (1300 points) and then Private club (1500 points to get 60% off your premiums). My wife and I are at private club status, which qualifies us for the maximum discount. And it’s not difficult to achieve this at all.
How I save 60% on my monthly premiums
Here’s how we manage to reduce our monthly premiums by 60%. Each year we do the following throughout the 12-month period
- Go for our annual health checkup to test cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, and glucose. This is done at our local Dischem. It needs to be booked and costs nothing because Multiply pays for it. This quick test determines your healthy heart score which will be used to calculate how many points you get overall based on red (bad), amber (ok) and green (great) scores. The healthier your heart the higher your points-earning potential. If you have an unhealthy heart, your points will be limited until you are reassessed and earn a better score. Doing your annual checkup gets you 80 to 110 points, depending on your score.
- Fill in our online health, safety and financial wellness questionnaires. These need to be done once a year and cover lifestyle, home and vehicle security. They are all multiple-choice, easy to complete and done online in the comfort of your own home. They cost nothing to do. All you need is a Momentum online profile (ask me if you need help setting this up). You get 20 points per questionnaire.
- We walk 10 000 steps 16 days a month. If you are fairly active every day, this is the easiest way to get good points. You’ll need to wear a step counting device and link it to your online Multiply profile (I can help you do this). Your device will count your daily steps and send it to your online profile automatically. For each day you walk 10 000 steps, you get 1 point. Alternatively, or in addition to this, you can go to the gym and swipe your Multiply card for at least 16 days or more to get the same points. Every time you swipe your card you get 1 point. We don’t go to gym but we do our steps – at home around the yard.
- Go for our annual fitness assessment. This is an extra points option. If you don’t manage to go to gym or do 10 000 steps 16 days of the month, going for a fitness assessment twice a year will give you the same points as exercising. This involves visiting an affiliated biokineticist at your nearest Virgin Active gym (you don’t have to be a gym member) who will check your heart rate, blood pressure, BMI, flexibility and lung capacity (step-ups only, no jogging, press-ups or sit-ups – it’s easy). This gets you up to 100 points. Instead of a fitness assessment, you can participate in an elite event like a cycle race.
- Annual financial review. This entails an appointment with your broker to reassess your products. You get 100 points for doing this. Email or call me if you need yours done.
- Download and activate the Momentum Safe Dayz app on your phone. Momentum uses this to check your speed limit and the times you’re out driving to track your road safety. You get 1 point per safe day recorded. Instead of using Safe Dayz you can get your car safety checked at Tiger Wheel & Tyre to earn up to 80 points.
- Having multiple Momentum product categories also earns you additional points from 70 points (for 1-year duration) up to 120 points (for a duration of 5 years or longer).
Plus, depending on your points status, you qualify for upfront partner rewards from Dischem (12%), NuMetro (50%), Virgin active (up to 25% off), Garmin (up to 40% off), Mango Airlines (up to 50% off), Takealot (up to 25% off), among others. Our personal favourites to make use of are Dsichem, NuMetro and Takelot.
In addition to the above, there are other perks like cash-back, family incentives, Multiply Money, and TaxTim.
Interesting fact
Most of momentum’s policy claims are paid on early detection. This is made possible by attending the health and fitness assessments to pick up any illnesses early enough to treat it successfully. The average South African has a life expectancy of around 68. Whereas the average year of death of an active Momentum Multiply member is 84 because of these assessments that lead to early detection, allowing ample time for treatment of illnesses before they become fatal.
Disclaimer: the points system is reassessed each year so may change slightly from this article.
